Water Source and Properties

The spring waters of Balneario de San Juan de la Font Santa are classified as medicinal mineral waters rich in sodium chloride and high in mineral content. They emerge at the ground surface at a temperature of 38ēC and were first declared of public use in 1869, and are the only exploited mineral springs in the Balearic Islands.
The underground source is derived from the natural waters of deep aquifers. The water acquires its mineral content by dissolving materials as it rises up towards superficial cold water aquifers formed by sedimentation during the Miocene period.
According to analyses, the waters of the Spa have a high mineral content of 25.34 g/l., Chlorine and sodium salts predominate, although the existence of other elements such as magnesium, calcium, sulphur, fluorine, and potassium in smaller amounts is no less significant.
Colourless and transparent for the most part, the waters do tend to acquire a blue-green colour in when present in large quantities. They are also mainly odourless, but can give off a light sulphurous odour in covered premises, and have a strong salty taste.
